Even though different forms of color photography have existed since the 1800's, color photography did not become popular with the general population until the price of color film came down in the 1970's. 

As a result of this trend, most of the famous historical photographs taken before the 1970's are in black and white. 

Modern technology gives us the ability to "colorize" these old photographs which gives us a fresh new look at what our world actually looked like back then.
